The KRIS Guide To Turning 30 (feat JAY Z & Britney Spears)

My birthday, which I have blasphemously referred to as KRISmas is fast approaching. This is going to be a big one; KRISmas XXX (that’s thirty in Roman numerals for those of you who didn’t grow up watching WrestleMania and in case you have a dirty mind…). The thought of thirty has been looming for a while now. I have had a few friends who joined that club already and it has been in the back of my mind for the last few years; in fact, I’ve been struggling with my age since I hit a quarter century. My friend, the blossoming YouTube star that I wrote about earlier this year turned thirty in January and shared thirty things she learned…

Feature: The Bonavista Social Club

in Features by

Sometimes the REAL Newfoundland and Labrador gets lost in the shuffle of row houses and screech ins. Our hearts lie truly in the depths of rural Newfoundland, down by the water in the coziness of small, yet connected communities. The Bonavista Social Club is a reminder of the centre of our province, small town, great food and a place to feel at home. Located in the community of Upper Amherst Cove on the Bonavista Peninsula, Bonavista Social Club is owned and operated by Katie and Shane Hayes.  At first glance, it seems to be a cozy restaurant with a few NL fixings but it is more of a food production. Though food is served daily, homemade food and products are available for…

Sci-Fi On The Rock 11 Touches Down At The Sheraton

in Features by

The Geek shall inherit the Earth! (At least that’s what it says in the Bible, doesn’t it?) If this weekend’s Sci-Fi on the Rock was any indication, the Geek DENITIELY inherit Newfoundland. If you found yourself at the Sheraton or anywhere in its vicinity this weekend it definitely would not have been all that strange to see people dressed as Hogwarts students, Doctor Who’s, superheroes, intergalactic bounty hunters and anything in between. Since its inception. Sci-Fi On The Rock has become the largest science fiction and fantasy convention in the province and I finally got a chance to go on Saturday with two little Younglings in tow. Yes, in an effort to keep the title of “Flyest Uncle In…

There is a comedic understanding among Newfoundlanders, and one social media outlet has managed to pinpoint it exactly. Cape Shore Memes is a Facebook page that has hit the nail on the head when it comes to Newfoundland relatable humour. It’s like everything we mock, experience, love and hate all rolled up into small image clips to keep the day going. Put simply, sometimes Newfoundlanders face a lot of government crap (as I am sure everyone does), they are disappointed in the Leafs (as they should be), they are tired of the weather and the bs, but there will always remain a connection and unique language here. Those distinctive characteristics of this island can be used to bring humour which…

Gettin’ Cheesy With It

There isn’t much better than a grill cheese sandwich unless you up the ante and add some fancy cheeses, breads, and other interesting ingredients. If I have just piqued your interest and didn’t turn you away by my lame title, then you really should check out Lisa LeShane and Oh My Cheeses at the St. John’s Farmer’s Market (as well as several festivals throughout the province). Oh My Cheeses uses homemade bread, locally inspired jam and cheese to make their sandwiches and Lisa’s menu is just as clever as the name for her business. Oh My Cheeses came out of what Lisa calls “pizza nights”. “Basically, we’d make our own dough and then come up with fun pizza ideas,” she…
