When Megan Jackman was first developing her handbag company, she was advised to consider a different name brand other than Ragmaw – but luckily she listened to her gut. “Ragmaw is a term used to describe someone, usually a child,  dressed in ragged clothing, not necessarily in a negative way. It’s a Newfoundland term that my grandmother remembers using as a child. I use it as my business name because I just like the word and I like that it  has something to do with ragged fabric pieces because I started off using bits and pieces of recycled fabrics,” said the designer, who originally hails from Central’s Robert’s Arm. Brooke Patey wanted to share her drawings in a less conventional, yet approachable way. So she turned to fashion as a wearable means to display her talents.   “I wanted to share my art with my friends and family in a way that it wouldn’t just hang on the wall and clothing to me was the way,” said the designer. “I enjoy that each piece of clothing takes a different journey with each customer.” Patey started Blank Page Clothing Co.,  featuring urban streetwear covered in her artwork. Evans and her childhood friend Lauren Saunders took the request one step further and turned the room into a dream, a clothing line called The Shop, SALT to honour the space. “That’s where the name comes from. It was a convenience store run by the grandmother,” said Evans of the location. The Shop, SALT is a Newfoundland based clothing company designed and operated by the two friends. “We wanted to design clothes growing up as kids. Lauren has this story she loves about us designing Barbie clothes as kids,” said Evans. “I still have our first Barbie dress. We dreamed of…

A lot can be said about MJ Couch: she’s a Newfoundland clothing designer from Deer Lake, mom of two, wife, entrepreneur, and hilarious interviewee, to name a few. No matter what capacity in which she’s considered, it’s always draped in bright colour, energy, creativity and happiness. While speaking with MJ on the phone, she was multitasking like a boss, hand sewing and chatting away as if she wasn’t a Newfoundland Fashion Designer superstar. In the beginning, MJ was a primary teacher who sewed for something to do. “I used to make clothing with my mom and it went from there. While teaching in Trout River, all I had was thread and scissors and I got into it,” said MJ of…
