Vicky Mullaley has publicly voiced the inevitable problem with dating apps in St. John’s – she keeps seeing the same 5 to 6 men every time she re-installs the Tinder app.
“I’m not judging, they see me just as often as I see them. I don’t want to date any of them but I feel like writing each of them individually and being like ‘alright b’ys, let’s get a conference room down at the Delta, let’s get a whiteboard going and be like what are we doing wrong?” asked the comedian in one of her uploaded video rants.
This is a small expert of the huge talent that is Vicky Mullaley – the stand up comedian who sometimes parody’s her life, the news, or simply her dating experiences in a hilarious presentation in song.
“I made my first parody video roughly a year or so ago- it didn’t start this way. I have never considered myself a singer, unless it’s a goof. If I sang for real, you’d have second hand embarrassment for me, but not when it’s a goof,” she said of the process. “I can bang out a parody song polished in a couple hours compared to a writing a comedy set. I try to pepper jokes throughout so everyone stays laughing.”
Mullaley’s relatability comes from her raw and explicit nature to joke about herself in a well-balanced presentation. Similar to her tinder shout out, the comedian switches gears on a common habit all of us are casually partaking in and makes it hilarious.
“Real life is what I know. It’s so much easier to take embarrassment and make it funny. I am comfortable living with embarrassing things that happen. It’s self-deprecating but not going passed the line of people feeling bad for you. Just things that hit home, like wanting to lose weight or wanting to get a date- those are relatable,” she explained. “You don’t have to look far into life to find things to talk about.”
The comedian grew up “around the bay,” as she describes it, but has been in St. John’s for the last ten years. She was named Overcast’s 2018 Best Comic and “Funniest Person in Newfoundland 2017” in James Mullinger’s Comedy Bootcamp – both accomplishments are not surprising, and also deserve a head-nod to Mullaley’s hard work and dedication to the stage.
“Sometimes I am just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks but I try to do comedy as much as possible. For example. last year, I averaged three shows a week. The only way to get better is to hit the mics,” she said of her method.
Her constant exposure and ongoing talent has provided some well-known platforms. In 2018, Mullaley sang a parody about the weather on CBC’s Here and Now featuring former weather newscaster Ryan Snoddon.
“I had strategically wrote that song. I figured if I made Ryan Snoddon the focus, they’d have to pick it up. They were interested immediately. He was so onboard, it was awesome. I really wanted to dunk his head in the snow but thought ‘it’s enough that he is even here,’ but he looked at me and said, ‘so we should put my face in the snow now?’I didn’t even have to ask, it was awesome,” remembered Mullaley of the Rain, Fog, Sleet and Snow parody, sung to the tune of I Love Rock n’ Roll.
Not everyone of the comedian’s performances are a CBC production, but a simple self-made video of her review of current events shot from her living room. One of Mullaley’s most successful Facebook posts was her news review of break-ins using heavy equipment was used to smash into businesses. Rob a Bank, Steal a Backhoe, to the tune of Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.
“I thought I should write a parody and I put some feelers out there and a bunch of people said the backhoe robberies and I was like ‘Of course!’ You gotta strike when the iron is hot. No doubt something will inspire me again soon.
