Have you ever heard a new word and then suddenly you stumble across it numerous times afterwards?
Gracie Joe’s Kitchen was whispered in my ear a few months ago, when the coffee was suggested to me through social media. A facebook post of suggestion which I took with a smile, but wondered if I would ever find myself sipping a cup of Joe in this so-called place. Though I love good coffee and I will pay for good coffee, I rarely trek the streets seeking a cup when it can be made in my home.
A few days later, an inbox message about the same place popped up. Then, a conversation about their food happened at work. Gracie Joe’s kept coming at me like the word serendipity after its movie release.
So that is where Fred and I hit up next. I mean we had to. It was calling us from the heavens. Go to Gracie Joe’s and good hot chocolate will come. (Did that feel like a Field of Dreams reference or was I pushing it too far? Meh, I am sticking with it.)
Have you been to this place? It’s tucked away on the corner of Quidi Vidi and Forrest in what appears to be a quaint hobbit house.
Upon entering this unexpected café, I was met from a scene to a coffee house in the movies: friendly staff with a cool open concept kitchen, different art hanging everywhere, a chalkboard wall with a list of menu options.
Do these places really exist outside of Hollywood sets? All I need now is a brick walled loft in New York that I can somehow afford on my freelancing salary. Next time I will ask the owner how to acquire such digs in the middle of Newfoundland.
Winnie and I cozy up with a hot chocolate in one hand and a gluten free muffin in the other. A muffin in our household fits into the same category as a cake because that is what they are. Healthy looking versions of cake loaded with sugar. Needless to say, Fred was pretty pumped for this rare delicacy, or what she calls the great muffin. Her face was slammed with disappointment when the bite provided no gluten and in fact was a healthy option.
It worked out because I got two delicious orange cinnamon muffins in the end.
The hot chocolate was amazing. It was definitely one-of-a-kind. I can’t even take the time to explain it, but rather use my words to try and convince you to try it out yourself. Mad props to the people of Gracie Joe’s, Fred managed to gulp down a hefty half of your warm beverage and that is saying something.
I cannot stress enough how important it is for the people of St. John’s to make this place a staple in their week. Whether it be coffee, home baked goodies or a well-cooked, yet reasonably priced meal.
Gracie Joe’s deserves to be a part of our vocabulary, without question, a household name.
Let’s see how you do in the final ranking Gracie, but for now, thank you for making my day.
