Another North: Not just another band

Every once and awhile a sound comes along that is completely different. A sound that produces a feeling of satisfaction, giving off more that a head bopping beat but rather a reminder of where we are from and who are now. Another North is not just another band- they are amazing. They are a piece of home with superior talent and a true love for music and art. Another North started about six years ago. “Vince, Aaron and I instantly clicked, so we decided to keep things moving in a new project,” recalled drummer, Brad Wells. Bassist, Justin Hickey joined the band two years ago following an audition. “The boys had gone through a couple of bassists but we…

On the Saturday of 2014 Labour Day Weekend, St. John’s saw the debut of the Harbourage Festival, featuring artists Mick Davis & Thin Love, Repartee, Elliott Brood, Matt Mays, and Hey Rosetta! As the name would suggest, the harbour front was the setting of this unique festival. I was lucky enough to have a chat with Lorne Loder and Jon Loder, who were part of the small team behind this new endeavour.   Q: First of all, thanks very much to you both for making time to talk to me as you finish up what must have been a busy weekend. Secondly, and more importantly, congratulations on what I thought was a very successful day. I had a blast…

If you’re looking to take in a huge dose of live music, you can do far worse than the NL Folk Festival. In the second week in August, for the 38th year in a row, dozens of bands and musicians from across the province and around the world descended on St. John’s for three days of songs, tunes and merriment. This year, bigger names like Fortunate Ones, Gord Downey, Kevin Burke and Basia Bulat joined a multitude of perhaps less known but excellent performers on the main stage and in workshops. Whether you wanted to just sit in the field and be entertained, or to get up close and learn something, you could get your fill. While it’s not necessarily…

Hanrahan is not a hipster

Recently a new type of character has come to be recognized and well known- the hipster. You all know him, he listens to vinyl, he usually has a beard or a moustache. The most notable trait of the hipster is the fact that he supposedly takes little to no effort to be anything but mainstream. Lucas Hanrahan is not a hipster. His pants are rolled up, his guitar is on his back, he considers growing facial hair but he is too busy being emotionally involved in every moment in life that he is unable to be effortless. Yes at a glimpse he does withhold a somewhat hipster-ish style, if you will. I am sure he digs the sound of records,…

It’s no secret that St. John’s has an eclectic and thriving music scene. Fittingly, we are starting to see an influx in music festivals, including the successful bar-hopping Lawnya Vawnya earlier this year. But, the outdoor, camping-type music festival has been one not yet fully represented on the East Coast of our province. One group of motivated individuals, Neon Satori Productions, aims to change this. They put off the successful Summer Soulstice Electric Enlightenment festival over the June 21 weekend. I had the opportunity to talk to two of the organizers, Russell “Razz” Squires and Zane Snow, about the festival and future plans for more. In fact, there is another festival in the works for Labour Day weekend at an…
